News Correspondent - Pangea3 - Dubai

Thomson Reuters is the leading source of intelligent information for the world’s businesses and professionals. We combine industry expertise with innovative technology to deliver critical information to leading decision makers in the financial and risk, legal, tax and accounting, intellectual property and science and media markets, powered by the world’s most trusted news organization.

Reuters in the Gulf is seeking a proactive and enthusiastic company news reporter, with a focus on real estate but also tracking technology, aviation and retail. The successful candidate will be able to break news, dig up exclusives and write in-depth trend pieces. A primary focus of this Dubai-based position will be one of the world’s most dynamic real estate markets, looking at a region known for huge skyscrapers, lavish hotels, and signature buildings made possible by petrodollar wealth. As well as transforming their own desert kingdoms with glass, concrete and steel, the Gulf countries have also been among the most active investors in global real estate, buying buildings in some of the world’s most expensive locations. Its domestic growth has not been without controversy though, with the treatment of low-paid construction workers drawing international scorn – in particular in Qatar, as it prepares for the 2022 World Cup.

The role will also entail assisting with the coverage of technology matters, something close to the hearts of the young and tech-savvy populations of the Gulf, an aviation sector which boasts not only three of the world’s biggest airlines but also a whole host of other carriers with strong growth ambitions, as well as a retail market in which the Gulf’s addiction to shopping malls has driven the concept to a whole new level of luxury.

The successful candidate will be rewarded with a diverse and all-action job which covers a wide spectrum of the Reuters file, and so they will need to be energetic and thoughtful in their approach, as well as a strong team player.

Speaking to a range of people, from site workers to construction magnates, and young start-up founders to executives of global companies, would be a significant part of this job and so a successful candidate must be at ease in engaging such people and extracting information.

Amidst an abundance of marketing spin and obscure corporate governance practices, strong news judgment and the ability to read between the lines would also be key assets for any successful candidate.

While Arabic is not essential for this role, applicants with such language skills will be considered favourably. Experience of reporting on real estate matters, especially in the Middle East, would also be welcomed.

Qualifications

At least three years of experience with a news organisation

Proven ability to break news

Ability to work under time pressure

Arabic proficiency an advantage

Strong source-building
